Who Are We?
Literacy Volunteers of Gloucester, Inc. (LVG) is a non-profit organization with the goal of increasing the literacy rate in Gloucester, Virginia and the surrounding area. We provide free one-on-one tutoring in reading, writing, math and other subjects to adult learners from all walks of life. Some are preparing for their GED test. Others are learning English as a new language, receiving tutoring near the end of a prison sentence, or simply trying to improve their basic academic skills. Whatever the need, the compassionate tutors and volunteers of LVG are here to help adult learners and to advocate for the benefits of a higher literacy rate: improved individual quality of life, reduced poverty, higher employment rates and job retention, and overall community wellness. We embrace the concept of lifelong learning and believe it's never too late to achieve personal success. For more information about the services we provide, visit our ABE/GED/ESOL page.
Mission and Vision
Our mission is to equip adults in Gloucester and the greater Middle Peninsula with the educational skills to improve their quality of life. Our vision is to promote adult literacy in our community until our services are no longer needed.
LVG has been a presence in the community since 1981. Since its inception, LVG has trained tutors for adults who wished to improve basic reading skills.
In the early 1990s a basic skills and GED program was begun at the Gloucester County Jail. This program continues to be a strong component of our services; LVG continues to be the sole provider of direct instructional services to the inmates.
As our county began to see an influx of adults for whom English is not their native language, we began offering help with English as a new language (ESOL). We have seen this program gradually grow and it is very active.
In 2006, LVG expanded its program to offer instruction to adults who wanted to prepare for the General Educational Development (GED) test. We continue to provide these services. We collaborate with Rappahannock Community College by supporting their students who are enrolled in their Career Readiness Program. We are the official registration site for the GED tests which are given monthly at Gloucester High School.
